Nothing true requires you to betray yourself. The antidote to self-betrayal...
Updated: Sep 13

You hear me a lot talking about surrender. KAP is 'path of surrender'...
There is a kind of surrender that expands you.
And there is a kind of surrender that slowly disconnects you from yourself.
From the outside, the two can look almost identical.
Both may involve staying with discomfort.
Both may ask you to loosen control (egoic grip).
Both may challenge the identity you have built.
Both may require trust.
But internally, they will feel very different.
True surrender brings you closer to what is real.
Self-abandonment takes you farther away from it.
And sometimes the ego is clever enough to call self-abandonment surrender. Framing it something good for you...
Possibly sounds like...
I just need to trust more.
I need to let go of resistance.
Maybe this is my lesson.
Maybe my boundaries are just my ego.
Maybe I need to stay open.
Maybe I am being triggered because there is something in me that still needs healing.
And sometimes that is true.
BUT NOT ALWAYS.
There are moments when the most spiritual thing you can do is listen to the quiet NO inside you.
Surrender is not the absence of discernment

The true path of surrender does not require you to stop discerning.
It does NOT ask you to override your body, silence your intuition or hand your inner authority to another person.
Surrender is NOT becoming passive.
It is not agreeing with everything that happens.
It is not tolerating what violates you in the name of being loving, conscious or non-dual.
It is not shrinking yourself so that somebody else can remain comfortable.
True surrender is much simpler.
It is surrendering the fight with reality.
The constant attempt to control what happens next.
The attachment to how another person must behave.
The way our ego insists life unfold according to its plans.
The need to manipulate the moment into something other than what it is. Sometimes we outgrow relationships and try to force things to work, despite knowing the truth. When we manipulate reality, we only extend the illusion opposed to surrendering to what is.
It's possible to accept completely what is, the current version of reality.... and choose to say no. Walk away, move on. Love someone deeply and choose not to remain in relationship with them.
You can recognize the same consciousness in another human being and still have a boundary - that's OK!
You can understand someone's wounds and refuse to let those wounds repeatedly hurt you.
This is where surrender and self-love and self-respect meet.
The discomfort of expansion is different from the pain of self-betrayal

Not every uncomfortable experience is wrong for us.
Growth can be uncomfortable.
Truth can be uncomfortable.
Intimacy can expose the places where we would rather hide.
A powerful spiritual process may bring fear, grief, resistance or vulnerability to the surface.
So the question cannot simply be: Does this feel uncomfortable?
A deeper question is: Is this discomfort bringing me closer to myself, or asking me to leave myself behind?
There is a difference between the discomfort of expansion and the pain of self-betrayal.
Expansion can be intense, but somewhere underneath the intensity there is often a sense of aliveness.
Something in you becomes more authentic, more honest, more you.
More expansive and open.
More present.
Self-betrayal has a different quality.
You begin negotiating with what you know to be true for you.
You repeatedly override signals from your body.
You make yourself smaller.
You explain away what hurts.
You need more and more stories to convince yourself that something is right.
Your inner world becomes noisy because on a Soul level you already knows the truth.
The body often knows before the mind

The mind can rationalize almost anything.
The BODY is much less interested in the story... it speaks its own language.
It contract // It softens and opens
It becomes heavy // It becomes alive and light
It pulls away // it moves toward
This is one of the reasons surrender is an embodied process.
When we stop trying to manufacture an answer mentally, the ancient intelligence of our body can come online.
In KAP, I see this again and again.
When the thinking mind loosens its grip, the body begins to move according to an intelligence that has always been available inside each one of us. Beyond the mind.
A breath shifts...
A hand moves...
The spine responds...
Emotion rises...
Energy moves...
Stillness appears...
Nothing is forced.
The body does not need to understand the process conceptually in order to participate in it.
There is a deeper intelligence at play.
And learning surrender can simply mean learning to connect with this sacred intelligence within, ...again.
Non-duality does not erase the human side...
There is another misunderstanding that can happen in spiritual spaces.
If everything is One, who is there to protect?
If there is no separate self, why have boundaries?
If everything happening is simply Life unfolding, why resist anything?
Non-duality does not mean becoming unable to function as a human being.
The wave can recognize that it is the ocean and still remain a wave.
Your nervous system still communicates.
Your body still responds to daily life with its sacred intelligence.
Your humanity still has preferences.
There can be a clear yes and a clear no without constructing an entire identity around either one.
In fact, when there is less egoic interference, discernment can become even cleaner.
Less drama.
Less justification.
Less blame.
Simply:
This is aligned.
This is not.
This stays.
This goes.
Love does not require the disappearance of discernment.

Sometimes surrender means letting go
We often imagine surrender as staying.
Staying open.
Staying patient.
Staying devoted.
Staying with the process.
But sometimes the thing we are actually being asked to surrender is the thing we desperately want to keep.
A relationship.
A version of ourselves.
A teacher.
A community.
A dream.
An identity.
The future we thought was supposed to happen.
Sometimes we are not being asked to surrender to the situation.
We are being asked to surrender our attachment to keeping it.
And that is a very different form of letting go.
You stop forcing.
You stop chasing.
You stop negotiating with reality.
You allow what is complete to complete.
And suddenly surrender stops feeling like submission.
It becomes freedom.
Nothing true requires you to betray yourself
What is real may humble you.
It may challenge your defenses.
It may show you where you are controlling, avoiding, projecting or protecting an old identity.
It may ask more honesty from you than you thought you were capable of.
But what is real does not need you to continually abandon your own knowing in order to sustain it.
Real love does not require you to disappear.
Real spirituality does not require you to silence your discernment.
Real surrender does not require you to give away your power.
Perhaps surrender is not becoming less of yourself.
Perhaps it is surrendering everything that prevents you from being fully here. Fully YOU.
The control.
The performance.
The fear of disappointing someone.
The need to be chosen.
The need to be understood.
The attachment to how things should look.
And underneath all of that there's a quiet layer of deep inner knowing...
A knowing that does not need to shout.
A truth that existed before all the explanations.
And sometimes coming back into your power is simply this:
You stop abandoning what you already know.
True deep inner alignment.
